Jewellery by the Brazilian company, VanCox, is inspired by the lush exuberance of Brazilian nature. Their newest collection, launched at the Basel Jewellery Fair this year, celebrates the exoticism of the orchid, native Brazilian flower. Wanda Gontijo of VanCox, who conceives and designs all the jewellery and has been the secret of the company’s growing success since 1999, combines an orchid greenhouse with her atelier. “My passion for orchids began many years ago, and lately this has influenced my painting and jewellery”.
Bursts of clustered blossoms, and rhythmic ripples of spiky leaves, are translated into massive, dancing jewels of gold, diamonds and gems, with a new emphasis on swathes of sun-brilliant, heavily textured yellow gold. A previous collection, revolving around the forms of leaves and water drops, was based on the deserted, virgin beaches of Brazil, as Wanda Gontijo explains, “The desert beaches share their beauty with the Atlantic Forest, where thousands of exotic flowers bloom in colours and exuberance. It is the luxury of the wild.”
In other collections, Wanda Gontijo, an artist and sculptor, who trained both in Brazil and in London, at Central St. Martin’s School of Art, translated “Cipo”, the vines in the Serra do Cipo National Park in Minas Gerais as refined interlacing of gold and gems, creating “the sacred hidden place surrounded by untouched nature”, and turned their gnarled and twisted trunks into organic white and yellow goldwork gripping massive gems. “I want to be able to express a thought, a sensibility, a feeling without which a jewel becomes hollow, empty, soulless.”
